Baichu looked Tama straight in the eyes.
"The word for 'bad luck' in Ulanese, also means 'an afternoon'. Their scouting party noticed me first. So I ran. They were going to have their way with me, then kill me. There is no general reason, other than defecting, for an Ulanese woman to be so far away from her tribe. Gaheris makes sure that any defectors are killed on sight."
Tama can sense that Baichu does not like her continued inquiry, but she senses no lies in what Baichu had said.
"This wasn't even the worst day.. a week ago, monsters attacked Hillé and I. I would have died.. Hillé helped me escape, and took me as far as she could, before, her wounds took her..." Baichu lowers her head sadly. Nergüi knows Hillé to have been one of Baichu's family's horses.

"Monsters? What sort of monsters? Where were you when they attacked?" It wasn't that Tama did not feel compassion for the woman, but she could not ignore what could be vital information, even at the risk of seeming callous.

All the grim talk between Baichu and Tama started to make Tun Si feel uncomfortable. So she strode over to where Nam Il and the others sat, and took a look at the map for herself.
"One of my father's associates resides in the political quarters of Calrong," she recalled. "Time to time he'd visit our mansion on business matters, thought I don't remember what sort."

"I don't know," Baichu exclaimed impatiently, "They were just, blue monsters.. I was too busy running away to study them like some Fa-Re-..." Baichu stops herself.
"..I'm sorry. I'd never seen those kind of creatures before, nor do I care to remember them."
Meanwhile, at Tun Si's words, Nam Il asked, "It probably isn't wise to seek him out, if you're technically a runaway.."

Tun shook her head.
"Never said I'd seek him out. It was merely a jog of the memory. But, it'd be best if I avoid the whole Upper Class quarters altogether."

Tama nodded, unphased by Baichu's discomfort, but not about to exacerbate it any further. "...I understand. I'm sorry to hear about your friend." As she says this, she pours more water into Baichu's cup. Time was getting on, and she didn't want to linger in one place for much longer. "We are on our way to the Free Islands ourselves. I suspect Chagatai would find it unforgivable of me if I did not offer that you ride with us at least that far."

"He could not stop me from riding with you if he wanted." She turns to her spear, tightening its blade. "But, I need a horse.."

Chagatai scratched his chin.
"At present, we're two shy of what we need. If you borrowed the geshou's horse for a night, we could perhaps acquire some."
It didn't take much of an imagination to understand that to the Ulanese mercenary, "acquiring" a horse basically meant "stealing."

Chagatai's grin was a reptilian thing, all teeth and no mirth.
"Why should we spend coin when we can hamstring my dear uncle Gaheris' efforts without spending a single bent copper coin?"

"With all due respect, Ms. Tama, I'd feel more comfortable taking the reigns, and I'm not sure if I'll get to do that riding with you.." Baichu tells Tama. Tama can clearly remember Baichu would not suffer being the passenger on Duk's horse, and it seems clear now she would rather not be the passenger on any horse.

"With all due respect to you, Baichu, your comfort is not high on my list of priorities presently. Your safety, as well as that of the rest of my squad, is. I'm afraid I will not waiver in this decision, so there is no point in further arguing it." Tama then turns to Nergui, eyes widened in amazement at his suggestion. "Steal from the army we just ran from? I can see the appeal, especially since you seem to have some sort of vendetta against this Gaheris person, but you understand why I can't even consider this, don't you?"

"...not to mention the time it would take to enact this plan of yours is too variable..." It was clear Tama was strongly against the plan, but she began pacing about, a tendency she has when deliberating over her next move. [rand=0015748727601021528709771530469879564340720605105165147836459800601]

The young monk knew she'd have no chance whatsoever at persuading Tama, so she She left Nam Il and the others to their map and went to set up her tent.
