Origin/Backstory: Khaigon’s origins are largely unknown and he makes an effort to keep it that way. He was born to a Quadarian mother of modest but comfortable means, and didn’t know much about his father for most of his early life. As a small-time trader in a minor but vital entry merchant town for caravans, the young Khaigon was exposed to many different cultures, peoples, and ideas that passed through from around the land. Along with his mother, this shaped him into an inquisitive and cosmopolitan person from a very early age, and he soon developed a knack for working with people and learning new things.
He had designs on being a diplomat or emissary for the Quadarian court, but was constrained not only by his family’s low standing on the social ladder, but by his own proclivities for anxiety, caution, and cowardice. He spent much of his young life introverted and tied to his mother and grandparents, and would not seem anywhere near destined for anything of renown. He eventually grew comfortable with this arrangement, and was content to spend the days reading, collecting the strange artifacts that often came their way, tending to the family garden, and befriending the many people he would encounter for a short time as they journeyed through, delighting in their stories and experienced, but nonetheless keeping his distance.
The bookish young Khaigon would remain a trader for his family until, soon enough, the passage of time began to claim each of them. Upon his mother’s deathbed, he learned a fascinating truth: he was the illegitimate son of a renowned Ulanese warlord, Ogedai, who had passed through the town incognito during his flight from enemies. This spurned in the older Khaigon a sense of purpose and birthright: he was not some petty trainer, but the heir to one of the most prominent conquerors and warriors the world had ever known (and one who had since disappeared following his failed campaign at conquering and uniting the Northern and Eastern realms). Upon his mother’s passing, Khaigon was left with unparalleled ambition and nothing left to hold him back. He would grow out of his shell, be a great warrior, and do great things for the world.
Knowing that even his adequate inheritance would not be enough for his journey, he sold the shop, most of its wares, and even some of his precious artifacts, and set out to the capital city, Dushara. He enlisted in the Quadarian military, where he hoped to achieve the standing and connections he’d need to meet his objectives, as well as to travel the land and beyond. By then his late 20s, he endured much hardship as an anxiety-ridden novice. But he endured, and over many years came to be an upstanding and disciplined warrior with an impressive aptitude for both scholarship and combat. He was soon enlisted into the elite Duskblade brigade, which would better exploit his unique combination of intellect and martial prowess. Unsurprisingly, but through many more years, he came to be one of their finest.
After years of service, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Marshal. Though still reserved and introverted at times, he displayed a knack for formalities, diplomacy, and affability when the occasion called for it. He got on well with his subordinates and superiors alike, and combined his scholarly developments with practical military skills to become an able tactician. He knew the languages of his many foreign opponents, the geography of the land, the mores and fighting customs of their armies. He could appeal to their traditions, or seek to exploit the weaknesses of them. He could use his knowledge of them to win them over, or take advantage of what he knew to find a weak point.
Whether fighting against Talzistani insurrectionists, Doryoskan raiders, or Free Island pirates, the tactics worked, and when push came to shove, he pursued warfare like politics: appealing to his opponents with diplomacy and honor, and leading his men through a restrained but effective use of force (one that wouldn’t always succeed, but would at least minimize casualties). This won him plaudits among enemies and allies alike, and ensured further upward mobility...
Decades later, Khaigon is found wandering the great expanse of the Fai-Rei Kingdom, far older and even more reserved. What occurred between the great gap between his rising in the ranks and his seemingly aimless wanderings is unknown. All that can be inferred is that he is still a very ambitious and power-driven man, but more quiet and grizzled than ever, even for his age. He seeks objectives that are obscure and audacious, and he seeks allies that are useful and interesting, but will keep their distance. However mysterious, it is clear that his intentions are great and sincere, but perhaps a cause for caution.
